My third post and I’ve already procrastinated. This past Saturday I followed through with one of my resolutions, to volunteer. I used Volunteer Match to find some opportunities. It ‘s a great site to use because you can search by location and interests, and then the site will provide any results that match your search and from the same website, as long as you are logged in, you can click on any opportunities of interest and sign-up.

I signed-up to be a volunteer for the Special Olympics, they were needing about 200 volunteers and was I excited because it was something I was really interested in, helping out those with special needs. I was even more excited when I found out bocci (sometimes bocce) was a Special Olympic sport! that’s my game! every Italian is born with a talent for bocci. Well, as of today, I’m still waiting to hear back so I don’t have any additional updates but will keep you posted.

So back to last Saturday. I work for a pharmaceutical company that specializes in HIV therapy and several people I work with are involved with volunteer work for the local HIV community. This was another one of the volunteer opportunities I was interested in because some of the activities I already participated in, like yard work for a home that cares for those with HIV and a walk/run/bike marathon to raise money. Last Saturday was a training session by AIDS Alliance of Carolina that organizes all the activities. The training session basically involved some education about HIV, a guest speaker with HIV who gave a passionate speech about how he benefits from the commitment of the volunteers, and finally just a wrap up session. I have to give a lot of credit to those that run the alliance, they were tremendous and dedicated people.

After the training session ended, we were told we would be emailed to ask about what our interests were and how we wanted to participate. I will probably reply to continue to volunteer with the seasonal yard work, the annual marathon, and some other annual events and monthly events like drag bingo. I mean, if I’m going to volunteer, I plan on having fun doing it, plus I used to bartend with a dude (well ‘dude’ might be too strong a word), anyways, a guy that used to dress in drag.

Well, hopefully the Special Olympics opportunity works out as well.  I set up a separate category for ‘volunteer’ where I will be posting any updated news.
